I do not LOVE the Twylight Books, nor do I LOVE Edward Cullen and I think that Bella is a manipulative, lying wench...and I don't expect you all to agree with me. just sayin...
I am 100 pages into the 4th, and finally the LAST book of the Twylight series...and can I just say that I can hardly wait to finish it. I know, "no body said I have to read it" and "if you don't like it, then don't finish it"...but here's the deal-- I cannot NOT finish it. Whether it is sick curiosity or what. I don't know-- but I need to finish it for a few reasons:
- personal closure-- I need to know that Jacob is OK-- he and the other Werewolves are in my opinion, thus far, the only decent characters in the book. Some of the Vampires take 2nd chair-- BUT NOT EDWARD- not liking him even one iota!
- knowing, like I said before, WHAT indecency my daughter has been exposed to.
- so that I feed that sick curiosity of how dumb a ending this series could possibly have.
I had lunch today with several friends to celebrate a few birthdays. We had a great time-- laughing, telling stories and opinions--one gal shared a new point of view with me concerning the Twylight series.
Here is one of my concerns:
- What I perceived as the target audience. Young girls, ages 12-18
- Stephanie Meyers did not intentionally target that age group-- BUT LDS parents saw that she was a LDS author and assumed that SHE WOULD NEVER write anything that would be indecent...therefore parents allowed their children to read and vicariously live and love through the eyes of dear sweet BELLA with out the parents even cracking the spine of the book. (now, now-- I know not all the people that read it are LDS, but this is stated from a LDS perspective) Children were exposed to a good deal of kissing, touching, dishonesty, immoral sleepovers, a bit of sex and a whole lot of lust-- all because parents assumed that "all is well in Zion" and they would not be effected by this indecencies in this world, written in a fantasy book authored by a LDS woman.
No, SILLYA speaking here, I am no prude-- I 've seen what's on the other side of the block and I do not intend to shelter my children from all the evils in this world-- although I do not intend to purposefully expose them to things that will harm thier Spirit.
One thing that I do thank Stephanie Meyer for-- the one good vantage to this series-- was that my daughter and I have had several open discussions on the what's, how's and the why's that the immoral suggestions stated in these books have brought up.
Take it or leave...just sayin...

Amen Sillya!
I read the books, too out of curiosity. I wanted to know what the hype was about. I don't want my girls to read those books either...to intimate for the target audience. I had to finish for the same reasons you have stated.
Good luck on finishing.
I read book 1 and 2, that was good enough for me. I do agree that a lot of perants let their girls and ( boys) read them because they thought it was "safe" I find it interesting that the books are found in the young adult or adult sections of a book store. I guess if the matterial is O.K. for a child it would be in the child section. I know the teachers at my kids school are VERY unhappy with the choice that some perents have made, to let their kids read it. They are seeing a lot of back lash from these books.
You made me laugh! I finished book 4 about 1 hour ago. I loved the books, but I was like you. By the end of book 2 I was kind of disgusted w/ EVERYONE- all of them. I really didn't want to read anymore because I got so irritated, but I had to see how it ended. I do, however, like Edward. I didn't like Jacob in book 2 or 3 though. By the end of this book, I'm okay w/ all of them. And yes, I think Edward is hot. How pathetic am I?? A married woman who thinks a 17 year old, fictional vampire is hot? That's just sick... Yeah, that just put it in perspective for me. I'm getting over it as I type. And I thought the movie was awful compared to the book. My 2 cents and I know that there are lots of people out there who will disagree w/ that. My favorite part was putting faces w/ names.
As for the decency in them~~ GASP!! These are in my kid's elementary school and the boys, yes, ALL OF THE BOYS, are reading them or have read them. Hmmm... I wonder why?? Word travels fast in that little circle I assume! It makes me sick, to be frank. I had this little theory going on in my head that if the school has it, surely it is an okay book. Book 1... not bad. But as they went on it got worse and worse. And I realized in book 3 that in book 4... it would bad. Glad I finished them. I can actually work and have a life again.
we saw the movie, i refuse to read the books. The movie was very clean, at least in comparison to what people have said about the books. I think there was one kiss at the end. I still would have had a problem taking my 12 year old to see it, only because I still think they are too young to start getting romantic fantasies in their head. Now pride and prejudice romance? Fine. But nowadays, especially using a girl who is supposed to be young highschool, there is too much for impressionable girls to identify with.
Oh, the movie was alright, Bella is a stuttering moron that doesnt seem to understand anything and is confused by absolutely everything, and Edward is just plain retarded. There are a few parts in the movie that make you just want to punch either one a few times. But otherwise its not a bad movie. Maybe its cuz I havent read the books, but I still dont understand all the hype there was for the movie.
I think you are great, what more can I say...
except that I LOVE reading your blog :)
do you give lessons on 'saying it like it is' ??? I think I need to take a course from you.
