how many in your neighborhood?

Setting the stage for a good story: There is a road closed between our house and the 4 mile stretch to the girl's bus-stop. So, I have to drive the same-- equal distance-- but a few minutes longer (stop light, more traffic etc).

A little more info: We live kind of in the country, but behind, beside and in front of my house are farms (corn, beets, wheat, mint)-- I can see 4 subdivisions from my windows-- I live at the end of a private lane with only 16 houses, each one of them with a few acres. The way I have to go now (for only this week) is county roads, connecting into city once you get into a more business district.
The plot: So here is today's observation while traveling on different than usual roads-- or maybe just noticing a trend...In the first 1 1/2 miles-- there were 14 HOUSES FOR SALE. After that there were none until I got to the neighborhood where the bus stop is... but...still..that is lot for a 1.5 mile stretch...isn't it?
The climax: I know we are in a strange and new economic fenom, but this is CRAZY-- and benificial for us might I add...( I'll explain in a minute). I drive around often, many places to go and be, and sometimes I am driving and dreaming...about having my own home, again... anyway, everywhere you go there are sooo mmaannyy houses for sale-- subdivisions and the country roads are speckled with FOR SALE SIGNS. and now the new crop of FOR RENT for those that are trying so hard not to loose their house in Foreclosure. (clarification for anyone who needs it--...we have not bought a home...we will give a 30 day notice to our landlord when we intend to move....we intend to fulfill our lease...which is the end of NEXT summer...)
Bonus features: Now for how this benifits us...are you ready...we are in the home buying market, have been for a while...and...here in about 6-8 months, there will be a PLETHERA to choose from...even though we really want to build, maybe the right house will find us... maybe it has just been kidnapped by its current owner and is waiting to be united with its rightful steward...maybe...or maybe the guy that is holding our land will be ready to sell it at a fraction of what he has dreamed it is worth...maybe...
The conclusion: so how many are in the first 1 1/2 miles you drive each day?

just curious...

last I counted... There were 20 someting in our neighborhood ALONE(including ours)!! And more and more are coming in with "Short Sale" signs(including ours). Isn't that sad... 20 in one subdivision!! You can buy our half acre :)... or our house!! :) good luck with your hunt....

I can see 2 from my front window and another 2 on our way to school. I know there are more but I don't travel the other way that often. It's scary but like you said it is really good for you. Love the kidnapped part. Classic!

just a bit more of my spouting off: I follow inventory and the median price changes by week (kind if a sick hobby of mine).... we currently have 8,777 houses on the market (as of monday)-- valley wide-- that is Single Family Residences and Condos-- this is what is on the MLS-- not the For Sale by Owners...25% are priced at a bit under 160k; 50% are 220k-ish and 75% are priced around 330k...houses are still way overpriced for our valley and our valley incomes...a house is only worth what is will sell for... inventory is growing weekly (albeit slower than a few months ago where we gaining 100+ a week), demand is down because average incomes cannot justify that size of a mortgage, and people are getting hungry...just sayin...

Howdy! Enjoy your great blog. There are about half a ba-zillion houses for sale around here. One good thing: my mom's house went on the market last month and, if all goes well, we will close on it before the end of this month. Somebody out there can still get a loan! (btw I'm spidee's mom)

O.k. so in the miles I drive everyday ( I counted today) going to my girls school there are 18 houses for sale. That dosn't include houses in our sub. Coming home from the school we usually take a different rout. So I set the kids to counting. The final number, 12. So all together 30. Given that most of these houses are out in the middle of"nowhere" How sad !! I feel so sad for those people trying to sell there homes. At least we are not in California . My younger sister is there. They bought there house almost 3 years ago for what they thought was a good price. They are now 120 thousand upsidedown in there house. They have some creative loans, and are feeling it . It is bad news. I don't know what they are going to do, or how they are going to make it. They have seen their house payment go up steady for the last 6 mounths. Between that and the cost of living going up so much, plus the medical bills they have ( she is pregnant, and has had a hard time) Even with a good job, and bugeting money, and doing whatever they can to save, they still come up short. Blessings come, and somehow they make it.
When things look bad, they can ALWAYS be worse. I will take my "opportunities to learn" , and be happy.
